Judith R. Shapiro
President Emerita, Barnard College
Dr. Judith R. Shapiro is a member of UoPeople’s President’s Council. She is President and Professor of Anthropology Emerita at Barnard College. Dr. Shapiro served as President of Barnard from 1994 to 2008. She is also Professor of Anthropology Emerita at Bryn Mawr College, where she served first as a faculty member and then Provost. Before that, she was a member of the Anthropology Department at the SA¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ of Chicago.
Dr. Shapiro is the President of the Teagle Foundation and currently serves on the boards of ITHAKA Harbors, Scholars at Risk, and the European Humanities SA¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½. She is a member of the American Philosophical Society and the American Council of Learned Societies.
Dr. Shapiro has her B.A. from Brandeis SA¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ and her Ph.D. from Columbia SA¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½. She has served as President of the American Ethnological Society and the Philadelphia Anthropological Society. Her major field research has been carried out among societies of the Brazilian tropical forest.
