Sheik A., Computer Science, Sierra Leone

Born in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, Sheik A. was born into a large family where he grew up with his six siblings. Unfortunately, he lost his mother at the tender age of ten. His father became a large presence in his life offering overwhelming support.

Sheik describes himself as a ‘go-getter.’ He loves dreaming and working hard to turn his dreams into reality. He is also academically very ambitious—always trying to upskill and add to his already impressive resume. Sheik has completed several significant certificates in varying fields, has 3 diplomas, a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and three master’s degrees.

At UoPeople, he has earned an MBA and is currently finishing a Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT). Why did he decide to pursue both? “I decided to earn degrees in business and technology because I feel they are both in-demand skills in the current world and will be needed to shape the future. I am passionate about learning new things that will create a positive difference within developing countries such as Sierra Leone and worldwide. My drive right now is to be able to utilize digital technologies that will lead to economic development,” he says.

Sheik joined UoPeople because he was impressed with the university’s mission of providing global learners with high-quality education at an affordable price. “For every student from around the world who wants to pursue higher education at an affordable rate, UoPeople is the answer. I couldn’t have afforded to pay $60,000 to $80,000 for my master’s degree,” he adds.

He is currently working as a banking officer at Rokel Commercial Bank in his hometown. He can manage his family and work at his full-time job only because of the flexibility he enjoys at UoPeople. “My success mantra has always been to balance consistency and perseverance.” When not studying or working, he likes to relax with friends and family. He loves to cook and read interesting books—especially those that help him grow.

In the future, Sheik wants to be an information technology expert. “I want to use creative techniques to innovate new technological devices and manage existing ones that will help to support businesses to maintain a high level of sustainability,” he shares.

We are super excited to see Sheik accomplish great things in the years to come and wish him all the best.
